Settle was neatly split in two parts by the Midland Railway when, in the 1870's, they drove a line northwards to Carlisle. A ruling gradient of 1 in 100 to Aisgill was proposed, and the market town of North Ribblesdale had its appearance radically altered by viaducts and embankments.
