Features
Rail's tale of Two Cities: the Great Central today
The centenary of the Great Central Railway's expansion to London sees two steam railways operating under the GCR banner. Both have plans for their own expansion until they form a through route from Leicester to the southern outskirts of Nottingham. Steam Railway looks at the potential for them both.
Oil for one, but not for all
Oil is an essential part of all steam locomotives, but what is good for one locomotive may not be good for another as they work under different conditions. Phil Haigh looks at the different types available and discovers the reasons why they must be different and how they have changed from BR days.
Cholsey - Change here for the Wallingford branch
Steam Railway's mystery columnist George Pembroke visits the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway to see what the railway has to offer and how it treats its visitors. He comes away impressed with the railway's shared main line station at Cholsey and helpful staff but concerned about Wallingford station.
Keeping the wheels turning at Bridgnorth Works
The Severn Valley Railway's workshops at Bridgnorth are amongst the best in the country with a wide range of locomotive repair skills. John Hunt visits the works to see what goes on and learns that nearly one third of the surviving main line steam fleet has passed through for some sort of repair there.
